Max Fotheringham

Perikope

Dec 12th, 2013

Two years on from 2011's In All Amber EP, the debut full-length effort from Max Fotheringham comes to fruition.  From the restlessness where we left off emerges a record of travel and a road leading east; a document of a journey's epoch and aftermath through a chronology of episodes from pre-departure anticipation to the looming horizon of home and the notion of altered being.  Drawn from the transits and the stops, the impressions - both literal and figurative - were formed, and in the closing months of epilogue, shaped and refined in the peaceful solitude of Belgian Winter.

Another bedroom project, this sophomore record shares clear similarities with it's five-track predecessor in both sound and set up, but duel mic'ing, day recordings, and full on stereo evidently establish a refreshing evolution with open windows and plenty of space to breathe.  Deeper, more diverse, and bolder than In All Amber, Perikope leads the listener on a true journey of sounds and 'scapes, drawing on a range of musical influences to create a showcase of instrumentalism and voice, in an album that emanates endeavour and reflection.

Recorded over the course of three cold months and engineered, discussed and finalised through the summer months from opposite sides of the globe.

Engineered by Wouter Gorts, cover art by Dabin Lee.

Surprisingly Coherent

May 18th, 2013

A fleeting overlap of paths sowed the seed for Brussels based duo 'mccandless' to expand and put some more plugged in ideas to record. It wasn't quick, and it wasn't always pretty but boy was it fun. Mike was just about to set out for London. Max had just returned from Asia. Timing was critical. Quentin popped up out of no where courtesy of Pierre. And Pete? Well Pete's always down for some bass.

The onset was to do one quick song and be done with it. In and out. Pack your bags and go. See you on the other side. But we failed. Oh lord we failed. Five songs don't quite make up a full length album but thirty two minutes of simultaneously smooth and edgy music makes for an ample showcase of this five-piece mccandless.

Recorded live amongst the pottery. Overdubs were thrown in left and right, comments were discussed arguments were had, ambient field recordings were taped in Melbourne, the artwork was designed and it was all mixed and mastered in the Higher Living studio.

On Sundays I Dream

May 26th, 2012

Sundays are typically a day of reflection. A slow and pensive day where one assesses the comings and goings of the past week, while looking forward to the coming days. It's a day to be introspective, to treat oneself to the pleasures of thought and maybe wander out of the gaze of the mind's eye just a little, allowing yourself to dream.

Sunday nights are hellish. The requirement of sleep is reluctantly forced upon the mind, but the mind refuses, instead fluttering and flirting with impossible thoughts of faraway lands and ambition, with each notion running full steam ahead into the next. The result is a state of flux between sleep and conscious that makes Monday all the more confusing and mundane, all because on Sundays - more than on any other day - every time you close your eyes, your feet lift off the floor.

'On Sundays I Dream' is a reflection on both sides of a day that deserves to be different from the rest. The lyrics were written in the restless early hours of the morning and the guitar parts were borne through a collaboration between Mike Hemsley and Max Fotheringham which culminated in a sunny day of late summer recording in Mike's apartment in downtown Brussels, courtesy of the analogue mixers and the analogue mind of Wouter Gordts. Effects were later added to the mix at the Higher Living Studio. The result is to be enjoyed.

Max Fotheringham

In All Amber

Nov 9th, 2011

Cooped up in the confines of his bedroom-cum-studio until the early hours of the morning, this first release from then Brussels-based singer-songwriter Max Fotheringham was conceived.

A solo project, recorded using a single microphone, In All Amber is a five song EP that explores restlessness, journeying through the various stages of insomnia and offering introspective notions and matter-of-fact declarations of the unresolved.

Predominantly acoustic, with sparing effects and curious ventures into more ambient places, this falsetto-driven debut EP presents a small portfolio of an artist's textural exploration and range. Written and recorded by Max Fotheringham and engineered by Wouter Gordts at the one and only Higher Living Studio.

MUSIC VIDEO : Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm -- a2 / stare

Sep 2, 2012

Back in February of this year, mccandless songsmith Mike Hemsley ventured deep into the Scottish highlands to find beauty, inspiration and presumably himself, whilst also getting a bit of exercise...
Tribute to such a memorable and windy trip to the fringes of Britain manifested itself in a music video to the dreamlike soundtrack of 'a2/Stare' by Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm that beautifully captures Scotland's rugged landscape.

Max Fotheringham Busking On the Road

May 12, 2012

In September of last year, fresh after the release of 'In All Amber', Max Fotheringham set out to reach Japan across land via Russia, Mongolia, China, and Korea. Arrival in Korea coincided with the loss of a bank card and a strapped for cash situation to which busking was the only remedy. Busking on a daily basis in the vivid autumn colours and eventually the snow, touched by so many warm and creative people, fellow musicians and music fans alike, he decided to stay the course of the winter playing the bustling streets of South Korea’s vibrant capital, Seoul. 서울 감사합니다!

Max Fotheringham open mic in Hualien, Taiwan

May 1, 2012

'Formosa' (meaning 'Beautiful Island') was the initial impression and subsequent name Portuguese settlers gave to Taiwan when they first laid eyes on the Island. A fitting name to say the least. On his travels, Max Fotheringham made his way to the laid back coastal city of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast where he stumbled upon the atmospheric Allstar Pub and local and expat musicians alike. Simply put, this is the music we liked, and consequently mic'ed (literally... and figuratively). First and foremost, we believe in music. Quality music. We are always in search, and particularly like to unearthmusic of the underrated variety. We also like physical media: products of tangible beauty and a medium that sadly seems to be languishing in today's insatiable digital landscape. The internet has revolutionised the way we consume music but it has also enabled us to take music for granted. Piracy devalues music and it is not an issue easily resolved.

At Higher Living we prefer to give the consumer more credit than others might. Rather than enforcing ethics, you will find our releases available for free digital download in a format of your choice for your listening pleasure. In the meantime we focus our energies on producing beautiful, handmade, physical renditions of the music we think worth sharing. You can purchase direct from us should you wish to compensate our artists in the traditional sense and receive a record in all its wholesome and palpable glory. Long live physical media!

Get in touch with us at info@higherlivingrecords.com if you are interested in working with us, or for feedback on the music, the website, or anything at all! A living, breathing human being will be on our end to respond, because at the end of the day real people, real food and real music is all that matters. In that order by default.
